About La Salle Debain

This is a weblog I'm keeping about my work on Debian and any other useful Debian related info I come across. It is not meant to compete with other news sources like Debian Weekly News or Debian Planet. Mostly it is just a way for me to classify and remember all the random bits of information that I have floating around me. I thought maybe by using a blog it could be of some use to others too. Btw. "I" refers to Jaldhar H. Vyas, Debian developer for over 8 years. If you want to know more about me, my home page is here.

The name? Debain is a very common misspelling of Debian and la salle de bains means bathroom in French.

If you have a comment to make on something you read here, feel free to write to me at jaldhar@debian.org.

You can get an rss 0.91 feed of the blog here.

Debian Decides Not To Carry An Umbrella Today

The Debian Project has decided not to carry an umbrella today despite the forecast of thunderstorms in the New York area.

Not carrying an umbrella will allow Debian the freedom of movement caused by having one less item to carry. Debian will also not have to worry about leaving it on the train or if its appearence of professionalism is damaged by green plastic with smiley faces on it.

Debian has had much success in the past in avoiding getting wet via some form of cap, sombrero or other hat. This alternative is being considered by Debian's elite headgear committee who hope to have a decision by December 2009.

The no umbrella policy was proposed and agreed during the Debian Project's yearly conference, DebConf, which is currently taking place in Caceres, Spain. The idea was well received among the attending project members.

Classic Spock > Emo Spock

The original plan was to see the new Star Trek film on Mothers Day being the incurable romantic that I am but it didn't work out so we ended up going today instead.

Overall we liked the film. It's best not to think about the plot too deeply or it will implode like red matter. (Red matter??? Are my children the scientists of the future? "I hereby name this new element Ballerinium") Anyway lots of jokes and explosions to keep your mind away from those kind of thoughts. As the title of this post suggests, I am not too fond of what they did with the Spock character. (Uhura Spock? Highly illogical.) The new Kirk is spot on as the green-alien-banging douchebag (amirite Uhura?) we know and love. And Chekhov, Scottie, and McCoy were great. The bad guy wasn't really that bad I thought. I hope they make the aliens badder and more alien in the inevitable sequels.

I Am Special, I Am Special, I Am Me.

Debian Times asked me a few questions

I received my first invitation to AARP membership. Aren't you supposed to be atleast 50?

Speaking of old age, the other day I overheard Shailaja tell her little brother while a Seinfeld rerun was on TV, "That's a classic. That's what they [indicating me and my wife] used to watch in the olden times."

Look what came in the mail today:

Ph33r!

I am me. The best me I can be.

New GnuPG Key

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

- -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA256

Recently there has been some brouhaha about migrating away from SHA-1 digests as used in GnuPG and to this end I followed the procedure described by Daniel Kahn Gillmor and created a new key which I will get signed at the Debian NYC meetup tonight and use to replace my existing key for signing packages.

The old key (which is still valid btw) is:

pre. pub 1024D/EE6DC66A 1999-12-16
Key fingerprint = 48DF D000 3BE7 1FF8 D9C1 5832 DA46 0E47 EE6D C66A

And the new key is:

pre. pub 2048R/C4794DAF 2009-05-08
Key fingerprint = 37EF 5B02 19C3 0C6E 47B2 51D0 EAA6 38FA C479 4DAF

You can fetch the new key from http://people.debian.org/~jaldhar/gpg.txt or from the public keyservers (I don't know if there is a lag in how quickly new keys are made available.)

This message has been signed with both the old and new keys.

New Laptop

Today is my 38th birthday. (Chronologically that is. It was on Thursday by tithi.) As a present I got an Acer Extensa EX 4630-3922 laptop. I added an extra 2GB of RAM to the listed configuration and still managed to spend less than $500. It came with Windows Vista but shrinking that to a minimum and installing Linux (Kubuntu Intrepid) on it was completely uneventful. Now the next step will be to learn about Xen or KVM (Who's winning these days?) so I can add Debian Lenny and RHEL 5.2 to the mix. The only complaint I have so far is the anemic battery life which barely reaches 2.5 hours though perhaps that might improve with a bit of tweaking.
